There are 6 ways to retire under FERS: Deferred, Postponed, MRA+10, Immediate, DSR/VERA, and disability. Learn the differences.
Federal retirement planning comes with understanding six distinct retirement paths for FERS employees, each with its own rules, traps, and insurance consequences. Advisors who understand these pathways can protect clients from irreversible benefit losses and build far more accurate retirement income plans.
Most clients aim for regular, fully eligible retirement, where they receive an immediate, unreduced pension, keep FEHB/FEGLI, and qualify for the Special Retirement Supplement (SRS). But many fall into alternative categories without realizing it, especially Special Provision employees (LEOs, Firefighters, ATCs), who retire earlier and face mandatory separation ages, and Early‑Out retirees (VERA/DSR), who may retire before MRA and experience multi‑year income gaps because the SRS doesn’t begin until MRA.

Advisors must also watch for two of the most misunderstood paths: Deferred retirement, which permanently forfeits FEHB, FEGLI, sick leave credit, and SRS; and MRA+10 retirement, where clients can choose an immediate pension with a steep reduction or postpone their pension to eliminate the penalty and later reinstate FEHB/FEGLI.
Disability retirement adds another layer of complexity, including strict filing deadlines, mandatory SSDI application, and an 80% earnings cap for clients under 60.
Advisor Priority Checklist
- Audit service history for vesting, deposits, and deduction gaps
- Model SRS timing gaps for VERA/DSR clients
- Run breakeven math for MRA+10 immediate vs. postponed retirement
A federal retirement plan is only accurate when all six pathways are evaluated. Advisors who master these rules deliver dramatically better outcomes, protecting the benefits federal employees rely on most.

“Thank you for providing me with the information about the Air Traffic Controller employee who had questions about Vision 100. I had never heard of Vision 100, and you were able to give me the information I needed to show him and explain it in a way that secured a $1.5 million deal for me.”
